On the occasion of the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD) to be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, we wish to invite you to a High Level Meeting of the Network of Women Ministers and Leaders for the Environment to be held on 20 June 2012, from 3.00 to 4.45 pm at the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Pavilion.
The high-level event is organized in collaboration with UNEP, IUCN, WECF and WEDO as a follow-up to the decisions taken by the Network during its breakfast meeting held in Nairobi Kenya on 21 February 2012. The meeting had two key outcomes.
Firstly, the meeting endorsed the development of a joint initiative titled Women powering sustainable development: A Global call for Action Rio+20 and beyond.
Secondly, a high-level Ministerial event to be held in Rio de Janeiro in June at the margins of the Rio+20 summit. The event will include a ministerial dialogue, awards ceremony, grassroots exhibition and official launch of the Global call of Action.
For the past two months, UNEP and its key strategic partners (IUCN,WEDO, GWP, GGCA, UNDP) have undertaken to develop a framework for implementation of the Global Call of Action and related activities through a consultative process involving governments, NGOs and UN agencies. In addition, they have identified activities that will be undertaken to commemorate the launching of the Global Call for Action on 20 June 2012 in Rio de Janeiro.
A key pre-Rio+20 activity is the Call to Network members, UN agencies, private sector and civil society to make gender commitments to be complied into one comprehensive document that will be integrated into the Compendium for commitments for the Rio+20 Outcome document. Enclosed is the draft document outlining the potential commitments made by that the NWMLE, UNEP, WECF, WEDO , IUCN and GWP and to which your organization is requested to include its gender commitments. A final copy of the commitments will be shared by 16 June 2012 and will be read out during the High-Level ministerial meeting on 20 June.
